Who Is Jaycob Tatum?
Jaycob Tatum belongs to a family with deep connections to American basketball. His father, Justin Tatum, played college basketball at Saint Louis University before establishing a coaching career. His older brother, Jayson Tatum, became one of the NBA’s leading players after joining the Boston Celtics in 2017. Jaycob, however, found his primary competitive opportunity in football.
His relationship with Jayson is well established. The NBA’s official biography of Jayson Tatum identifies Jaycob as his brother and Kayden as his sister. All three share Justin as their father, although Jaycob and Jayson have different mothers.
Jaycob has received public attention because of that family connection, but his own athletic accomplishments are documented independently. His high school championship experience and college football records offer a clearer picture of his background than the speculative personal biographies circulating online.

Jaycob Tatum’s Early Life and Family Background
Jaycob was born in January 2004, approximately six years after Jayson. PEOPLE magazine reports January 20 as his birthday, while some secondary biography websites give January 27. The difference makes the precise date less certain than his established birth year.
Unlike Jayson, who was raised primarily in St. Louis, Jaycob spent much of his childhood in New Orleans. He participated in youth sports and developed an interest in both football and basketball before moving to St. Louis for high school.
In a May 2023 interview with Prairie State Pigskin, Jaycob explained that he moved to St. Louis to live with his father. The relocation became an important turning point in his athletic development.
His family background provided a strong connection to competitive sports. Justin understood the demands of high-level athletics through his playing and coaching experience, while Jayson’s basketball achievements gave Jaycob an example of what pursuing a professional sports career could involve.
Why Did Jaycob Tatum Choose Football Over Basketball?
Basketball was originally an important part of Jaycob’s athletic ambitions. Growing up, he admired his older brother and imagined pursuing a similar path. Jayson’s success at Duke University and subsequent NBA career made basketball a natural interest within the family.
However, when Jaycob arrived in St. Louis for high school, Justin suggested that he participate in football workouts. What began as an opportunity to improve his physical conditioning developed into a serious interest in the sport.
During his 2023 interview with Prairie State Pigskin, Jaycob described how much he enjoyed football once he began participating. He eventually developed as an outside linebacker, a defensive position requiring strength, speed, physical awareness, and the ability to react quickly to opposing offenses.
Although football became his main competitive focus, basketball did not disappear entirely from his life. Jaycob also participated in recreational basketball while attending Western Illinois, where he played with teammates in the university recreation center.
His decision to pursue football established an athletic identity distinct from Jayson’s NBA career.
Jaycob Tatum’s Football Career at Christian Brothers College
Jaycob attended Christian Brothers College High School (CBC) in St. Louis, Missouri, where his father had previously played basketball and later coached.
At CBC, Jaycob developed as an outside linebacker and became part of a successful high school football program. His athletic ability and physical playing style attracted attention from college recruiters.
One of his most important high school achievements came in 2021, when CBC won the Missouri Class 6 state football championship. The Cadets defeated Liberty North 48–21, completing an impressive season with a 13–1 record.
According to the school’s official championship announcement, the victory marked CBC’s third state football title in five seasons and fourth in eight years.
Jaycob’s father also celebrated his son’s accomplishments. Justin’s official coaching biography credits Jaycob with being part of two state championship-winning football teams during his high school years.
Those accomplishments helped establish Jaycob’s credentials as a football player before he moved to the college level.
Jaycob Tatum’s College Football Career at Western Illinois University
Following high school, Jaycob joined Western Illinois University, where he became part of the Leathernecks football program.
His college career required adjustments to a higher level of competition. During his first season in 2022, he received a redshirt designation and did not appear in any games. This allowed him to continue developing within the program without using a standard season of competitive eligibility.
In 2023, he was listed as a redshirt freshman linebacker. His responsibilities included transitioning from the outside linebacker position he had played in high school to an inside linebacker role.
The change required him to develop a stronger understanding of defensive formations, blocking schemes, and offensive plays. In his interview with Prairie State Pigskin, Jaycob acknowledged that the inside position involved more complex decisions than he initially expected.
Western Illinois linebackers coach Brandon Kreczmer praised Jaycob’s strength, physical ability, and willingness to learn. The coach also described his commitment to studying game footage and improving his understanding of the position.
According to Western Illinois University’s official athletic records, Jaycob appeared in three games during the 2023 season without making a start or recording a tackle.
His documented college experience therefore included both the developmental challenges of Division I football and limited game participation.
How Close Are Jaycob Tatum and Jayson Tatum?
Jaycob and Jayson have maintained a publicly documented relationship despite following different athletic careers.
Jayson has acknowledged his younger brother through family photographs and birthday tributes. In a 2019 birthday message highlighted by PEOPLE, the Celtics star expressed pride in Jaycob and encouraged him to pursue his own direction.
Jaycob has also spoken warmly about Jayson. During his Western Illinois interview, he explained that their demanding sports schedules made regular visits difficult. Nevertheless, he occasionally traveled to Boston to watch his brother play.
He also followed Celtics games while attending college and encouraged some of his Western Illinois teammates to support Boston.
A March 2025 PEOPLE feature about the Tatum siblings documented the family’s continued connection through public photographs and accounts of shared sporting events.
Jaycob is also an uncle to Jayson’s son, Jayson Christopher Tatum Jr., commonly known as Deuce. Family photographs have shown the brothers and their younger relatives spending time together.
Their public interactions establish a supportive family relationship without requiring assumptions about private conversations or personal arrangements.
How Tall Is Jaycob Tatum?
Jaycob’s height is one of the details that varies across published sources.
In his May 2023 interview, he described himself as approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall. Western Illinois also listed him at 6 feet 2 inches and 215 pounds in its 2022 roster.
However, the university’s 2023 player profile recorded different measurements: 5 feet 11 inches and 212 pounds. CBS Sports has also displayed those later measurements.
Because the university published different figures in consecutive seasons, neither listing should be presented as a definitive measurement of his current height.
Jaycob’s football background is better established than a single exact physical measurement. He was recruited and developed as a linebacker, with his strength and physical style specifically discussed by his college position coach.
What Is Jaycob Tatum Doing Now?
Jaycob’s most clearly documented college football participation occurred during the 2022 and 2023 seasons at Western Illinois University.
Although some athlete databases continue to associate him with the Leathernecks, the university’s published football rosters for 2024, 2025, and 2026 do not list him. His subsequent athletic or professional activities have not been established through similarly authoritative reporting.
That distinction is important because older player profiles can remain accessible long after an athlete’s circumstances change.
There is also limited dependable public reporting about Jaycob’s romantic relationships. Claims about a wife or girlfriend should therefore not be treated as established biographical facts without credible supporting evidence.
His documented story remains centered on his family background, high school success, and experience competing in college football.
Conclusion
Jaycob Tatum is more than a familiar surname connected to an NBA star. As Jayson Tatum’s younger half-brother, he grew up within an athletic family but pursued football instead of following his brother into competitive basketball. His Missouri high school championship experience and documented seasons at Western Illinois provide the strongest evidence of his sporting achievements. Together with his public comments about Jayson, those records portray a young athlete who developed his own path while maintaining close family ties.
